Moving to Assisted Living Checklist

Aging is a journey with lots of important stops along the way. Entering into the golden years of life is an important time for changing, adapting and planning for the future. One of the biggest conversations for seniors and their families often revolves around senior living questions. Whether the discussion around senior housing came up because of a change in medical condition, interest in a lifestyle change, the need for daily support or a change in finances, finding the right place to live will relieve stress for both the senior and their family.

Every senior is different, each person’s needs are different and each family’s wants are different. Because of this, it is vital to align each senior’s health status, financial needs, personal needs, lifestyle, health goals and personal interests with the right senior living community. Learning about the types of senior housing available, asking senior living questions and making the right choice for the future can help everyone involved stay happy, healthy and fulfilled!

What Is Assisted Living?

What is assisted living? Assisted living communities are one of the most popular types of senior housing. In fact, more than 800,000 American seniors currently reside in assisted living. An assisted living community welcomes residents who need various levels of personal and medical care. Living spaces can be shared quarters, apartments or individual rooms. So, what are the assisted living services provided within the communities? Here are seven examples of assisted living services:

  1. Daily meals and snacks
  2. Medication management
  3. Support with the activities of daily living
  4. Recreational and social activities
  5. Some medical services
  6. Emergency care
  7. Laundry, landscaping and housekeeping

At River Crossing, assisted living residents are able to manage their daily lives with the support and encouragement of the team on-site. They can choose activities, set health goals and participate in social activities that help them achieve their quality-of-life goals! Assisted living services at River Crossing include:

Moving to Assisted Living Checklist

While the benefits of assisted living are enormous, the actual move to assisted living can be a bit daunting. There is a lot of planning to be done, details to manage and a large change of life circumstances that can all feel like a lot for seniors and their families. However, this move can be much less stressful with the right support and resources. The best way to approach this major life change is to create a checklist when looking at assisted living and the moving process. Here is a sample of a moving to assisted living checklist in 10 steps:

  1. Make an appointment with your primary care physician to ensure all your medical records are up to date; if you are moving to a new area, identify a new primary care physician
  2. Ensure your medication is in order and your prescriptions are refilled
  3. Decide if you want to employ a moving company; identify and select a company
  4. Identify the items that will make the move to your new home
  5. Consider selling, donating and gifting items that will not make the move
  6. Clearly label all items while packing; ensure heirlooms and family treasures are packed safely and securely
  7. Change your address with the U.S. Post Office and set up mail forwarding
  8. Pay all current bills and pay off all balances; schedule to turn off services if necessary
  9. Ensure you have contact information for family and friends; share your new information with them
  10. Identify all the paperwork needed for the assisted living community; complete the paperwork and set up any necessary financial arrangements
